THE BOAT PARADE: Let’s have more boats this year in the Opening Day Decorated Boat Contest and Parade and more auxiliary skippers. The theme is Mardi Gras Parade so we are looking for an SYC skipper with a desire to be outrageous, "New Orleans Style". Many of you may not know about the Opening Day Boat Parade. It is not just about the Blessing of the Fleet although that is a wonderful part of Opening Day. The PICYA, Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association sponsors this contest and each yacht club participating earns points toward the “Club of the Year” award for the number of boats participating.

This is what the PICYA has to say about the event: “In a patriotic affirmation of our determination to stand tall and strong, up to two hundred fifty recreational boats from Northern California Yacht Clubs are expected to enter a decorated boat competition to the theme “Mardi Gras Parade”. In addition, various classic vessels, both motor and sail powered, are being invited, some of which are over 100 years old. The occasion will be a unique opportunity to see these special boats, all at the same time, sailing close to shore where land-based spectators can enjoy the event from Crissy Field to PIER 39. The parade will be led by one of the City of San Francisco's popular fire boats. To promote a safe and enjoyable day, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadron and other designated craft will patrol the parade route. Applications must be in by April 11th so hurry.
