Commodore Flag COMMODORE - JAMES "J" RIGLER

James Riger has been a member of the Club since 1999. He has served as Vice, Rear and Race Director. He found his niche in the club documenting races, events and long-time members on digital video. His productions also include promotional tapes for the America’s Cup Challenge and the Sausalito Challenge, Race Awards Night and continues to document the history of the club and its members. Over the last several years he has been creating a video on the currents and tides of San Francisco Bay.

Rigler moved to the Bay Area in 1979. He has authored two, four-color photographic books. His 20-program video series, “Conversations with Interesting Characters” documents creative people, and includes many artists, writers, photographers, etc. who are accomplished in their field. Rigler co-produced a video documentary on winemaker, Robert Mondavi which aired in 2005. He and his wife, Gail, sail the Rubaiyat, a Newport 30.


 

Vice Commodore Flag VICE COMMODORE - JIM GABBERT

Jim has lived in Sausalito since the early 60's, lived on a boat until the early 90's. He has been the Grand Marshall of the Sausalito Lighted Boat Parade for 20 of the 21 years. Jim owns and runs the 85 ft Stephens Marine "Defiance" and also owns the 164 ft yacht “Invader”. Jim  produced and hosted the 50's Dance Party on KOFY-TV20 which he owned up until 1998. He has been on San Francisco radio and TV for over 53 years. He also has been a member of the Waikiki Yacht Club since the mid-70's. Jim was President of the Sausalito Art Festival and served as President and Chief Lobbiest for the National Radio Broadcasters Association from 1970 to 1980. Jim was President and Chief lobbiest for the California Broadcasters Association in the 1980's. He has been inducted into the Broadcast Hall of Fame. Also recieved a major award from President Kennedy for having been the first succesful stereo FM in the country and has recieved many lifetime achievement awards. He has owned many radio stations and KOFY-TV. He is currently the Chairman of the California State Emergency Communications Committee handling all of the State Amber Alerts and is a fill in talk show host on KGO Radio. Jim is Vice President of the Sausalito-on-the-Waterfront Foundation.

Rear Commodore Flag REAR COMMODORE - JERRY TARPIN

Jerry joined the Club in 1990. He retired from the shipping industry in 1996. Currently holds a Captains license and has worked as a delivery skipper.

Jerry has served on the Board for the last four years as Port Captain and Director at Large heading up the Business Advisory Committee, and this last year took over fleet management for SYC’s power boats.  Two years prior, Jerry served as a member of the Finance Committee, and prior to that in 1996, he served on the Board as Bar & Galley Director.

Jr Staff Commodore JR. STAFF COMMODORE - OZ WEST

Oz has been a member of the Club since 1981.  He has served as Commodore in 2009, Since 2004 he has served as Vice and Rear Commodore, Treasure, on the Financial Committee and on the Long Range Planning Committee.  He has also served on Cruise, Race, and Entertainment Committees at various times over the years.
 
Oz has lived in San Francisco for over 40 years and has a Bayliner 32 which is kept at South Beach Yacht Harbor in San Francisco in the winter at up in the Delta to use as a home away from home during the summer.  Oz recently retired from an engineering and project management firm which he owned for 28 years.  He is now a member of the Civil Grand Jury in San Francisco.  He also is doing some volunteer work and has recently done some acting as an extra or bit parts in movies and commercials being filmed in the Bay Area.

Secretary Flag SECRETARY - ELAINE THORNE

Elaine and Pete have been members of the club since 2003 and reside in Mill Valley. She served as Membership Director for two years. She was also Membership Director for the SYC Auxiliary for two years.

Elaine has worked for a number of software and computer companies, and retired from State Street Bank as Senior Vice President, Managing Director, Investments .Elaine's education includes undergraduate and graduate degrees from Indiana University, a graduate degree from Northwestern University and the University of Vienna  in Austria.

Elaine currently is a Managing Director of Expense Reduction Analysts, a firm of over 700 consultants and analysts. She has volunteered for several years at the Sausalito Art Festival, as well as pursuing her interests in trading futures and options, cooking, birding, and traveling.

Treasurer Flag TREASURER - DARRYL LEDOUX

Darryl joined the Club in 2002. He is Senior Manager for Safety & Security for Autodesk, a computer aided design (CAD) software engineering development firm.  Darryl lives in Pelican Harbour, Sausalito, with his wife, Anne, Vice President & Controller and Chief Accounting Officer for Corcept Therapeutics, a Bay Area biotech firm, on their 1974 55' Chris Craft Commander, Enchantment. For fun, Darryl and Anne virtually walk out their back door to cruise their 1990 38' Bayliner, French Twist.

Anne is currently Treasurer for the SYC Auxiliary and Darryl served as Treasurer in 2009 and for Cruise Director for two years before that.  Both Anne and Darryl believe in volunteer service and Darryl looks forward to the challenge and opportunity to continue to serve on the SYC Board of Directors in the position of Treasurer and on the Long Range Planning Committee.  He knows he can work well with the other Flag Officers to ensure the SYC continues on a sound financial basis.

Port Captain Flag PORT CAPTAIN - JIM CONNELLY

Jim joined the yacht club in 2003. He served as house director in 2008 and is looking forward to his second term in 2009. Jim and Marti are native Californians and have spent most of their lives in Marin. They have a C&C 41 named Shamrock, which they race in the double handed division. They are also members of the OYRA & SSS.

AUXILIARY PRESIDENT - PETER THORNE

PPeter joined the yacht club in 2003. Since then he has actively volunteered for many activies at the club. He and his wife, Elaine moved to Mill Valley in 1994.

Peter holds a degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His professional career has been involved with sales and marketing management for technology companies. Peter and Elaine are Managing Directors for Expense Reduction Analysts, an organization that focuses on assisting companies with the reduction of their operating expenses. He has volunteered for several years at the Sausalito Arts Festival, chairing the Champage One booth.On weekends he is often found sailing on Chrisma, a Catalina 36.

MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR - JOHN LERNER

John joined the club in 2005. He is an investment banker specializing in commercial real estate. John has been part of the Sausalito maritime community since he built his first houseboat in 1978. He is a life long sailor having raced and crewed worldwide and got his start by helping manage the family marina and yacht brokerage in Annapolis, MD.  John served in the US Merchant Marines in college. John is deeply involved in all aspects of the Sausalito community.  He currently serves as Sausalito Park and Recreation Commission Chair, is past President and a current Board Member of the Sausalito Lions Club and is a past Director of the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce. John has demonstrated his commitment to the SYC through continued participation in club activities having served on countless work details and club committees including Opening Day. As a member of the Board of Directors John looks forward to his continued involvement as Membership Director.

RACE DIRECTOR - JOHN MOUNT

John has been a member since 2005. He is an Internet infrastructure and on-line application designer who has been on and around boats all his life and who lives in Sausalito with Peta Forbes.  John and Peta have been active in the SYC's race program for the past three years and most weekends can be found somewhere on the Bay sailing with friends, that is if they're not at the Club or out on Mercury.  John learned to sail in Maine by launching a sunfish through the surf, which in retrospect he considers a bad idea, and has sailed most extensively up and down the east coast. His daughter Lauren has become a competent Laser sailor having completed her 7th year of the SYC Jr. Sailing Camp last summer.

HOUSE DIRECTOR - ROD BAUER

Rod joined the Sausalito Yacht Club in 2007. Rod's boating experience includes commercial gillnetting in Alaska and participating in sailing races in the Pacific Ocean and the Med. He currently sails a Hunter 35.5, "Mer d'Azur," and a Lido 14. He holds a General Class amateur radio license, KF6NLV, and has been a SCUBA diver since the age of 11. Rod has worked for a number of software and communications companies, including Microsoft, Adobe Systems and Autodesk. During the Internet boom of the late 1990's, he helped launch and manage several software ventures based in California, China and Israel. Rod's education includes undergraduate and graduate study at the University of California in Berkeley and Davis, as well as Reed College in Portland, Oregon and the Università Italiana in Perugia, Italy. Rod is an active volunteer at the Spaulding Wooden Boat Center in Sausalito and has been a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate for Children) for the last three years. He's served as a board member and president of nonprofit and arts boards in California. Rod currently is a technology marketing consultant and entrepreneur.

CRUISE DIRECTOR - JEFF POLICK

Jeff and Melissa have been members of SYC since 1996 and reside in Mill Valley. They have been boat owners for 25 years and active in the SYC cruise program as frequent participants and cruise captains. Jeff has 33 years of sales management experience with IBM, Lexmark, and currently is Region Director Schneider Electric/APC Data Center Critical Power and Cooling Services. 2010 will be his second year as Cruise Director.

BAR & GALLEY DIRECTOR - MERV REGAN

Merv has been a member of the Club since 1992 and has served as Entertainment Director and on other committees in the past. He is co-founder of the annual lighted yacht parade and founder of the Sausalito-on-the-Waterfront Foundation, a 501 c3 non-profit.

Having grown up in the Bay Area, Merv moved to Sausalito in the late 70’s. He served on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce and as President twice. He serves as President of the Dipsea Race Board and is a member of the Board of the Dipsea Foundation and the Sausalito Art Festival Foundation. Merv is President of Innovative Marketing.

ENTERTAINMENT DIRECTOR - ROXANNE FAIRBAIRN

Roxanne has been a member of SYC since 2003 serving for many years on the Auxiliary Board as Entertainment Director and Membership Director.  In 2007 she won the Auxiliary Nancy DeBruyn Distinguished Service Award.  She continues to work and enjoy race committee while combining her passion for photography with watching her family race on their J105 “Roxanne”.  If she isn’t working a race she is crewing onboard and this past year took the helm for the annual SYC Women Skippers Regatta.  You can view her SYC galleries of races and events through a link on this website.

SAIL TRAINING DIRECTOR - CAROL MARTIN

Carol has been a member of the Club since 2002, served as Membership Director for two years, Chairperson for the Nominating Committee for two years, and volunteered many hours assisting with various events during the year.

She owns and operates Azimuth Insurance Brokerage Agency in Sausalito. Besides her regular job, she has volunteered with the Guide Dogs for the Blind and Sausalito Art Festival, as well as pursuing her interests in photography, cooking, collecting cookbooks, and traveling.

From a John Deere in Iowa, to a Newport 32 on San Francisco Bay...it's been an unusual, and interesting journey and she is anxious to start this new one in 2010!

LONG RANGE PLANNING COMMITTEE DIRECTOR - ANDY EGGLER

Andy has been a member of SYC for 30 years.   He served 3 years as SYC’s Treasurer and 2 years as Race Director.  Professionally, Andy is an institutional bond trader, specializing in U.S. Government securities.  He worked for Merrill Lynch for over 20 years and is currently employed at a boutique Wall Street firm in San Francisco.

On a personal level, sailing has been one of Andy’s biggest passions.   Included in his resume of sailing excursions (where he was the captain for most) are six pleasure trips between the West Coast and Hawaii; two Pacific Cups; a voyage from North Carolina to Italy, crisscrossing the Mediterranean from the Turkish Aegean to Gibraltar for ten summers; and chartering in the Aegean, Sea of Cortez, the North Sea and many of the Caribbean Islands.    

While sailing is a passion, it is not his only one.  He is a PSIA certified Ski instructor and has climbed the Grand Tetons, Mt. Rainier and numerous of the highest peaks in the Swiss Alps.

WEB/COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR - PAUL ADAMS

Paul has been a member of the Club since 2005. He served as SYC Race Director in 2007. He started his sailing adventures aboard a Columbia 26 on SF Bay in 1975 when he moved to Marin. He and his wife, Barbara currently sail and cruise their Catalina 34 FANSEA for fun and charter. Paul was formerly a information technology executive and spent 25 years in various technology companies.

SHIP'S STORE DIRECTOR - SUSAN ENSEY

Susan joined the Club in 1994 when she moved to Sausalito.  She served for two years on the Long Range Planning Committee.  She also was involved with the Race Committee. She has served as Secretary since 2008. Susan is secretary of the Sausalito-on-the-Waterfront Foundation.

Susan is a consultant to high tech companies in recruiting management and software engineering talent and is active in volunteering in the community.

As Secretary last year Susan oversaw the Ship's Store and will stay on in that capacity as a Director at Large for 2010.

KIDS DIRECTOR - MARY RICHARDSON (Staff Commodore)

Mary joined the Club 1996.  She served as Commodore in 2008. As one of her areas of interest Mary has been enhancing the programs/events for the "SYC Kids" working closely with the SYC Auxiliary. She will continue in this capacity as a Director at Large for 2010.

Mary owns "Sea Lark", a 100' tug.  She owned and worked a 55' commercial fishing vessel for 15 years and then a 23' Bear boat for fun.  Her professional life includes 15 years of restaurant management in private and semi-private clubs, paralegal work.  Mary currently operates a yacht management business from her office in Sausalito.

PUBLIC RELATIONS DIRECTOR - MJ RONEY

MJ joined the Club in 2009. Her background involves 30 years in the real estate industry, and her career continues as an active Marin County Realtor and CA State Certified Residential Appraiser.

Upon obtaining the prestigious SRA designation from the Appraisal Institute, MJ was appointed Chief Operating Officer for a large Chicago area firm, and eventually established two successful companies that she built from the ground up.

MJ relocated to Marin County in 1998, and currently resides in Mill Valley. Her boating experience goes back to her childhood, when she spent summers on family power boats along Lake Michigan.

As an advocate for the SYC, MJ is committed to building community relationships and maintaining effective public support for the Club in 2010.

TROPHIES DIRECTOR - ROD DECKER

Rod's initial sailing was done with his dad in the Long Island Sound in a 17' all Mahogany Thistle. In Santa Barbara, Rod and his dad learned to race off-shore. In San Diego, he restored the boat and sailed it for a number of years.  After buying a 4 month old Catalina 30  named "Roeboat", he brought her to Sausalito in the early nineties - and she became one of the winningest boats on the bay. He then purchased a 33’ Sea Ray, "Risky Business".  He has chartered sailboats and scuba-dived numerous times in the Caribbean, and South Pacific.  He joined the club in 1992 and served on the SYC Board as  Entertainment Director for 2 years, and served as Bar & Galley Director for one year.
